What is Biomass?

Biomass boilers burn organic matter to generate heat, which is generally used for central heating and hot water. The most common fuel used in biomass boilers is wood pellets, however, wood chip, split logs and miscanthus (elephant grass) are just as good and can offer an ever greater return to those with their own or local supply.

Biomass boilers make very efficient use of the energy stored in wood, converting up to 95% of it into usable heat, compared to only 17% for an open fire and comparable with a good, modern oil boiler.

Correctly managed, biomass is a sustainable fuel that can deliver a significant reduction in net carbon emissions when compared to traditional fossil fuels as burning wood is carbon neutral – releasing the same amount of CO2 as it absorbs during its life. In fact, if a tree were left to decompose it would release the same amount of CO2 into the atmosphere as burning it would, with no real benefit to anyone.

Biomass technology provides both an economic and ecological solution in areas off the gas grid, where properties are forced to use more expensive fuels such as oil, LPG or electricity.

How it Works

A biomass system replaces your existing fossil fuel boiler, or boilers, and is connected into your current heating system which is controlled by either your existing network or a new control panel.

Depending on which boiler you choose, fuel is loaded either manually or automatically into the boiler which then controls the combustion depending on your heating and hot water requirements.

Due to their flexibility, biomass systems are ideal for retrofit into existing systems, however, all new builds should consider one, alongside other renewable technologies, before any other fossil fuel alternative.

Why Biomass?

Biomass heating systems help to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, save money on energy bills and cut carbon emissions. They provide a highly sustainable heating solution from individual homes right up to large scale industrial or public buildings, and can easily be installed in new projects or retro-fitted. They offer a very cost effective alternative to oil for buildings that are off-grid.

What are the benefits?

Biomass boilers are one of the technologies that are eligible for payments under the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). This means that not only will your heating system save you money and reduce your environmental impact, it could also generate income. Commercial users can receive between RHI payments for every kWh that they produce and use, depending on the size of the boiler.

The domestic scheme offers a deemed payment for every kilowatt hour based on a current EPC. This would mean that a typical home could recieve a significent subsidy toward the cost of a new heating system every year for 7 years.

The earlier the scheme is adopted, the greater the payback is likely to be.

The RHI is tied in to whichever boiler is installed, so it is important to choose one that is both reliable and efficient. Using all of the available information we will put together a comprehensive proposal outlining our recommendations. Our proposal document will compare a biomass installation with your current system (if one exists) and will include expected installation costs, running costs, fuel savings, carbon savings, eligible Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments, financial benefit and return on investment.
